Gifting Up

Here's a question -- how many of you give gifts to your bosses?

I'll answer after I read some of your comments.

  1. I always give a gift to my boss. Usually it's nothing more than a little box of chocolates, but this year I spent about $15 for something small plus chocolates.

Even if it's a boss that I don't particularly like, I still give something small because the holidays are a time to be together and put aside differences and be positive.

  2. I give gifts to myself all the time. j/k

    No seriously, never.

  3. I have for the first time this year, but only because my boss and I have a weird she-thinks-we're-friends kind of relationship. She seemed happy.

  4. Depends on the boss. My former boss I gifted every year. The current boss gets nothing.

  5. I give gifts to my boss and co-workers. Just something small like an ornament, a calendar or a candy jar or something like that. It's a small office and we all get along well and it just seems appropriate. We all give and receive gifts, not because anybody organized anything, we just do!

  6. Not me, but I'm a professor. In the past, I've written out holiday cards to the colleagues I work most closely with, though.

  7. I have 2 male bosses (1 immediately above me and the other ranks above us both) and I don't give Christmas gifts to any of them. I think in my company it would be considered as "sucking up" by the bosses and by other co-workers if we did such a thing. So we never give our bosses any presents.

But as Jen says (above) it depends on the boss. And the relationship you 2 have. If it's a small shop with 2 employess, then I can see how someone could give their boss a present, and for that to be totally okay.

Sorry for the deleted comment above by the way. I had a few typos and wanted to correct them :)

  8. We do a dirty santa-type exchange at work which works so nicely. There's no pressure to buy anyone specific a gift and everyone comes out a winner. :)
